Custom Security Gate for High-End Rental

San Diego, California

This San Diego rental had an alley-facing entrance that made tenants feel a bit exposed. Modern Fence & Deck installed a custom, heavy-duty security gate and added a touch of artificial foliage to boost safety without making the entry look harsh or out of place.

Overview

Modern Fence & Deck completed this custom security fence project for a high-end residential rental property in San Diego. The owner wanted a simple security upgrade at the alley-facing entrance, but didn't want the property to feel boxed in or industrial. The scope was straightforward: residential fencing paired with a custom, heavy-duty security gate.

The Challenge

The rental's main entrance opens to an alley, which creates an obvious problem: access is harder to control, and tenants have less visibility when they're coming and going. In a rental, that tends to show up fast in tenant feedback because it's an everyday touchpoint. The owner also didn't want something that looked like a stopgap. They needed security that still felt right for a high-end residential property—clean lines, intentional design, and materials that can handle frequent use across different occupants over time.

Our Solution

We recommended a custom, heavy-duty security gate paired with residential fencing, designed around the entry point where controlling access matters most. The idea was simple: deter unwanted entry without making day-to-day use a hassle for tenants. To keep the gate from feeling too stark, we added a touch of artificial foliage. It's a small detail, but it helps the entrance feel finished and residential rather than purely defensive.

Implementation

The work followed a standard install flow: confirm property lines and gate placement, check swing/operation clearances, and coordinate access so the rental could keep operating normally during the job. We fabricated and installed the heavy-duty gate to fit the opening and the expected wear, then connected the fence sections so the entry perimeter read as one cohesive system. To wrap up, we checked alignment, adjusted the latch/lock, and did a walk-through with the owner to confirm smooth operation.

Results

Once installed, the owner had an entrance that was easier to control and felt safer for tenants—especially when arriving or leaving through the alley. The heavy-duty gate created a clear barrier and a clear boundary around access. Visually, the artificial foliage helped the entry read as more residential and intentional, which matters on a high-end rental where curb appeal and tenant perception shape how the property is viewed.
