Coastal Gabion Retaining Wall - La Jolla, CA
La Jolla, California
This hillside property in La Jolla needed a retaining solution that looked clean from the street, handled drainage correctly, and held up to coastal exposure. We designed and built a gabion wall system with compacted base preparation, geotextile separation, and controlled stone fill so the final wall stayed straight, stable, and low-maintenance.
Project Overview
The client wanted a retaining wall with a modern look that blended with the landscape and architecture. Traditional block was an option, but gabion was selected for its texture, drainage behavior, and visual fit for the lot. The project goal was to stabilize grade transitions while keeping a natural, coastal look.
Site Challenges
Like many La Jolla sites, this lot had slope pressure, narrow working zones, and visible frontage. That meant layout tolerance had to be tight and drainage had to be treated as core structure, not an afterthought. We coordinated wall placement and elevation to keep lines consistent and avoid awkward transitions against existing hardscape.
Build Approach
We started with staking and elevation verification, then completed base preparation and compaction. Gabion baskets were set, aligned, and tied, followed by staged stone loading to maintain face uniformity. The wall was integrated with drainage planning so water could move through and away from the structure. Final grading and cleanup were done after load checks and alignment review.
Outcome
The finished wall delivers both function and curb appeal: it supports grade changes, manages drainage, and creates a strong visual edge without feeling heavy. The client got a retaining system suited to coastal conditions with a look that feels intentional and modern.
